WOMEN HEAD LAND COUNCIL
Two women have been elected leaders of the Anindilyakwa Land Council, which represents the 14 clans that own the Groote archipelago off the northeast coast of the Territory.
Cherelle Wurrawilya was elected chair and Ida Mamarika deputy chair.
Ms Wurrawilya says the board will continue to deliver the key initiatives contained in the ALC strategic plan, which include a range of wealthcreating projects, such as a high-end seafood farm.
The land council is driving the commercial enterprises in preparation for the closure of the manganese mine in 2031 when royalties will cease.
“These are big projects that are critical for the future and the preservation of culture and are guided by the aspirations and goals of the Anindilyakwa people.”
Ms Wurrawilya says the land council is focused on delivering better outcomes for the Anindilyakwa people, including through the six Groote archipelago local decision-making agreements.
“Many ALC board members will continue to lead Aboriginal corporations to create change through local control across key areas,” she says.
ALC chief executive Mark Hewitt congratulated the newly-elected board.
“We warmly welcome the new board and look forward to working with them on the many important initiatives being delivered on Groote,” he says.
“It is especially pleasing to see the strong female leadership of the ALC board.”
The election of a new board was overseen by the Australian Electoral Commission.
