SUCCESS TRANSLATES INTO REPEAT BUSINESS FOR BTC CONSTRUCTIONS

If securing repeat business is a sign of success, then Darwin’s BTC Constructions are definitely doing things right.

BTC Constructions have just completed refurbishments at the fifth and sixth properties they have worked on for the prestigious Hilton Hotels chain.

“Meeting time frames is critical to success in this kind of work and presenting a quality finish on time and on budget is the way to win repeat business,” Brendan says.

“And we’re just getting quicker at quicker at doing hotel refurbishments and we’re now coming in under their timeframes we’re being set.”

BTC Constructions most recent upgrades at the Hilton Hotel Darwin and the Double Tree by Hilton Darwin are properties numbers five and six in the firm’s list of successes for the Hilton chain.

It is the second time BTC has done refurbishment work at both the Hilton Darwin and the Doubletree by Hilton Darwin, while they have also completed refurbishments at the Double Tree by Hilton Alice and the Hilton Garden Inn Darwin.

BTC Constructions refurbished 186 rooms along with the bar, restaurant and lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn Darwin in just 12 weeks in a job which earned them a high commendation at last year’s Master Builders awards.

“When we get returning clients it means we are doing things right. And the more you do something, the better you get at it,” says Brendan.

The Hilton Hotel Darwin and Doubletree by Hilton Darwin both underwent upgrades between January and May this year and while it was the low tourist season the refits were still complex and demanding.

Working a floor at a time on both properties, two separate teams of contractors had just four months to complete the upgrades while ensuring the work caused minimal disturbance to hotel guests.

“There were no night works permitted and restricted day time hours. We had to make sure all the guests were comfortable.

“Importantly, we didn’t get any complaints from the guests in either of the hotels.

“The work was done under critical time-frames and finished on time, on budget and with no safety breaches,” he says.

“We’re improving with every hotel we do, and we’re also being helped in what we do by the growth in the capacity and capability of the business itself.”

BTC was Construction Manager at the Hilton Hotel Darwin on Mitchell Street, where 236 rooms were renovated, and the company acted as Head Contractor on the rebuild of 191 bathrooms at the Double Tree on The Esplanade.

Successfully completing not one but two complex jobs in tandem brings a genuine sense of achievement, says Brendan who was involved in both projects from their inception to their completion.

“It’s an amazing feeling, especially delivering that standard of finish in that timeframe.”

Brendan used his regular BTC subcontractors on the bathroom refits which required “full demolition”, retiled and refitting each of the 191 bathrooms.

The contract at the Hilton Hotel Darwin required a full upgrade of all rooms, from demolition to final cabinetry fit out of the 236 rooms, including corridors.

Pulling off the double-act with such tight timeframes demanded careful planning, with a particular eye to procurement.

“You’ve definitely got to make sure you’ve got all of your ducks in a row and that your contractors are fully committed.

He says that one of the keys to success in the construction business is developing solid relationships with the contractors tasked to turn building plans into reality.

“Relationships are 100 per cent important to delivering any project.”

Brendan has clocked up more than 20 years in the building and construction industry and says his own personal growth and experience have become important assets in helping the company meet clients’ expectations.

While BTC is Darwin based it works across the Northern Territory and has experience in defence facilities, remote communities, office refurbishments and renovations and, of course, hotel refurbishments.
