CJD EQUIPMENT

BIG ENOUGH TO TRUST, SMALL ENOUGH TO CARE

CJD Equipment prides itself on being a Northern Territory company nestled in a big national operation.

That gives the bases in Darwin and Alice Springs buying power to keep prices down and the ability to call on a vast range of expertise.

No wonder CJD’s slogan is: “Big enough to trust, small enough to care.”

The business is poised to expand with the upcoming addition of a Rockhampton branch, which will bring its total number of branches to 25 nationwide.

CJD is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It has been in the Territory for 12 years and has played a significant economic and social role within the community. It employs 36 staff in Darwin and 11 in Alice Springs.

Six of the staff are apprentice mechanics, including 18-year-old Grace Jensen, who grew up in Gove and now works in CJD’s well-equipped workshop on the outskirts of Darwin.

CJD APPRENTICE MECHANIC GRACE JENSEN … ‘AN OFFICE JOB WAS NEVER FOR ME’

“I enjoy this job,” she says. “An office job was never for me.”

Territory general manager Evan Woodall says: “We’re always ready to give enthusiastic, hard-working local kids a chance. We believe in training young Territorians – growing our own whenever possible.

“We spend a lot of time and money on training our apprentices. ”

CJD supplies a wide range of high-end equipment – from trucks, loaders and Isuzu portable power generators to spare parts and cleaning materials.

It has exclusive contracts to supply Isuzu trucks, Kenworth and DAF trucks; Volvo construction equipment; and SDLG loaders.

Trucks start at 4.5 tonnes – and can be driven on a car licence – and go up to the largest on the market.

“I doubt if there’s a major project in the Territory that isn’t using equipment supplied by us,” says Mr Woodall. “Our goal is to supply every major project in Australia.”

Partnering with international manufacturers gives CJD the ability to offer a diverse range of quality products that support a range of industries – from heavy duty construction equipment to trucks for road freight, haulage, and general delivery.

CJD supplies to construction and transport companies, mines, pastoral companies, Indigenous organisations – “and anybody who needs our support”. It supplies 70 percent of the trucks used in the Territory.

One of the company’s greatest strengths is the superb after-sales care, advice and servicing it offers.

“We don’t just sell equipment,” says Mr Woodall. “We provide world-class support. We’ve got a terrific workshop. “After-sales service is a massive part of our work. It helps sell our equipment.”

CJD has a 10,500 square metre operation at Yarrawonga.

Mr Woodall is well qualified for his job – he is a former soldier and mechanic, which means he “talks the same language” as the projects the company services.
