OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

In my capacity as the CEO of Energy Club NT for the past three years, I've had a front-row seat to the remarkable shift in the materialisation within the Northern Territory's energy sector. The evidence?

Just consider the escalating count of members joining our organisation, which now sits at 515. The uptick in interstate and global companies knocking on our door, eager to find the next opportunity, speaks volumes.

This surge is largely driven by promising developments in the Beetaloo Basin, the unwavering support from both Federal and Territory Governments, and robust discussions around Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

Tamboran Resources receiving approval for its environment management plan is a milestone that allows the company to construct up to four exploration and appraisal sites and undertake drilling and flow testing of up to 15 natural gas wells in the Beetaloo Sub-basin. Exploration is crucial for our industry as we develop these onshore assets, ensuring a reliable supply of gas for Territorians.

With the completion of the gas sales agreement with the Northern Territory Government, we are looking at more affordable energy to live, work and play in this incredible region we call home.

More so on the onshore gas front, we have a new player in the game: Top End Energy. They have been granted the 38th Petroleum Exploration Permit in the highly prospective McArthur Basin, marking a significant milestone for our industry as this is the first permit granted in the NT since 2015. Top End Energy will join our partners Santos, Empire Energy, and Tamboran in exploring the potential of this region.

Top End Energy’s petroleum exploration permit allows them to explore identified sections of land located southwest of the town of Elliot. Preliminary studies suggest the area is highly prospective for shale gas, natural hydrogen, and helium — key elements that will aid our transition to net zero by 2050.

These onshore and offshore gas developments wouldn’t be possible without CCS. In our race to achieve the target of net zero by 2050, we need to be able to store carbon and offset what would previously have been emitted.

I have mentioned in previous columns the misinformation that surrounds our industry, and CCS is key to successfully achieving our national goal. We need to support our industry now more than ever. With increasing international interest, we don’t want Territorians missing out on the opportunities ahead.
