KULBARDI FLIES INTO DARWIN
Australia’s largest Indigenous-owned business and office supply company has opened a distribution centre in Darwin with a determination to become a strong part of the community.
Kulbardi sells an enormous range of products – everything from office supplies including stationery, furniture, print, kitchenware and canteen products, including tea, coffee and biscuits.
The business provides Australian-made products wherever possible and also has many Indigenous businesses as part of its supply chain.
It goes beyond just selling supplies – the company also offers an advice service for creating brand awareness, promoting workplace health and safety, and workplace design and installation.
Kulbardi is the Noongar name for the magpie and symbolises both Indigenous and non-Indigenous coming together and working as one.
The distribution centre is in Winnellie and joins a network of centres in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
Kulbardi, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, was kickstarted by a large contract with a big mining and resources company in West Australia and now boasts a string of blue-chip companies across Australia.
“We’re very excited to be operating in the Territory,” says founder and executive chair Kim Collard.
“We see this as a great opportunity to do business with the government, defence and the mining industry in the Northern Territory.
“Darwin and the NT is a key part of our growth strategy.”
The company, which employs 40 staff, has distributed more than $1 million to community programs on Indigenous communities through the not-for-profit Bibbulmun Fund.
The fund provides educational scholarships and has paid for dialysis machines for remote communities in Coober Pedy, South Australia.
“The installation of the machines mean that patients can stay in close proximity of their communities and not have to travel long distances to Darwin or Adelaide for treatment,” says Mr Collard. “That’s hugely important for the patients healing to be close to country and community.
“When I established the Bibbulmun Fund in 2015 I didn’t want us to be seen to be all about take, take, take – we wanted to be seen to giving back, and I wanted to leave a legacy for my community.”
Kulbardi is a member of the Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network and sponsored the 2023 NT Aboriginal Economic Development Forum, which was hosted by the NTIBN.
