GUMATJ CORPORATION
VISION, LEADERSHIP, ENTERPRISE
East Arnhem Land’s history of land ownership is not only written in history books, but witnessed in the businesses being built, the classrooms being opened, the jobs being created and the decisions being made by Yolngu people on Yolngu land.
As the Northern Territory marks 50 years of land ownership, Gumatj Corporation stands as one of the region’s clearest examples of what land rights can become when matched with leadership, enterprise and long-term vision.
Almost two decades since the corporation began, Gumatj remains deeply connected to the movement that helped shape the future of East Arnhem Land. Founded by family, for community, it carries forward a legacy shaped by leaders who fought to protect Yolngu land, culture and decision-making.
This purpose continues through Gumatj’s growing network of businesses across resources, construction, civil works, development, retail and emerging industries. Each business has a role to play, but all are connected by a shared vision to anchor the future of the region for its people.
Among its businesses making a significant impact to support the community is Gumatj Resources, which launched Gulkula Mining in 2017, a 100 per cent Yolngu-owned and managed mining operation, which became Australia’s first Indigenous bauxite mining company.
With the last bauxite expected to be mined in 2029, the region is preparing for a significant economic transition — reinforcing the importance of Gulkula Mining’s role in producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of bauxite each year, while helping build a skilled local workforce that creates real employment pathways for local people.
Gumatj Corporation chief executive Klaus Helms OAM says the operation demonstrates the importance of investing in local enterprise as the region prepares for life beyond large-scale mining.
“The end of Rio Tinto’s mining operations marks a significant milestone for our region, but it also reinforces why Gumatj has always focused on building our own businesses, our own capability and our own future.
“Gulkula Mining is an example of how purpose-backed organisations can partner with major industry while maintaining local ownership. As the region transitions, this kind of Indigenous-led enterprise will be critical to creating jobs and ensuring Yolngu people continue to play a central role in shaping East Arnhem Land’s economic future.”
But it’s not just traditional industries that define the region, with Gumatj recognising East Arnhem Land’s untapped potential to support innovative, future-facing industries. Through its collaboration on the Arnhem Space Centre project in 2019, Gumatj helped position the region at the forefront of an emerging industry for Australia.
This first-of-its-kind partnership created a significant opportunity to diversify Gumatj’s business operations, open new local employment pathways and position East Arnhem Land within Australia’s emerging space industry. It is a case in point for dual value in how land, leadership and strategic partnerships can work together to unlock new industries, strengthen regional capability and create long-term benefits on Country.
Despite its commercial success, for Gumatj commercial success is only one part of the story. Its true value lies in how that success is fed back into community to support the Yolngu people.
In 2017, Gumatj established its own lease management model for Gunyangara through the Ŋarrariyal lease agreement. The 99-year lease demonstrates the practical power of land ownership, with Gumatj overseeing lease and tenure management for the community, while lease fees are reinvested into programs and services that strengthen the quality of life in Gunyangara.
In addition to funding social, nutrition, and health programs, this reinvestment model creates opportunities for long-term economic development, generating local jobs, training and business growth — giving investors, partners and community members a clear, locally managed pathway to engage with land and development.
The same principle is evident in Gumatj’s work across education and housing.
Under the direction of Gumatj Corporation, and in collaboration with Dhupuma Barker, Gumatj Construction was engaged to deliver the build of Dhupuma Barker School in Gunyangara. Completed in 2025, the project included four new classrooms designed to support education that integrates strong academic foundations.
Built by community, for community, the school is a clear example of Gumatj’s commercial capability being used to support long-term social outcomes, and ensures education in Gunyangara remains locally relevant, community-led and aligned with aspirations for self-determination, opportunity and future generations.
“Everything we do at Gumatj is connected by one purpose to create lasting benefit for Yolngu people. That commitment has guided us since the Corporation began and it remains just as strong today,” says Mr Helms.
“As custodians of the land, we have a responsibility to preserve the legacy of land ownership while building the next generation of Indigenous-led enterprise, opportunity and self-determination. For us, commercial success is never separate from culture, Country or social impact; it is a way to strengthen our community and build a future for the Yolngu people.”
As East Arnhem Land looks to the future, Gumatj Corporation is at the cutting edge of delivering value for partners and people. The opportunity ahead is significant, a region rich in culture, capability and strategic potential, led by an organisation with the experience, vision and local authority to turn land ownership into lasting.
