DANIELLE NETS EXPORT TITLE
She has always been passionate about fishing and outdoor life in general, especially living in the Northern Territory, but struggled to find appropriate clothing that was UPF50+ and fitted well.
“Fishing is traditionally a very male dominated space and, therefore, grossly under catered for women.
“That’s when I recognised a gap in the market for functional, feminine and stylish fishing apparel tailored for women.”
Northern Tide Apparel was born.
The company was named Emerging Exporter of the Year at the NT Export Awards in October after breaking into the American market and represented the NT at the national awards in November.
The awards recognise Territory businesses that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in exports.
Territory exporters contribute more than $14 billion to the Territory economy annually and are a significant contributor to Australia’s national trade.
International trade and investment are the foundations of economic growth and diversifying export growth strategies for businesses will be critical for the future of the Territory.
Northern Tide Apparel started with a concept design of a fishing dress in 2017.
“Since then it has been designed, redesigned and tweaked several times in sample format and hundreds of times in my head.
“I began by sketching dress designs at the kitchen table, then sewing templates at a small machine in my bedroom and working at a computer desk tucked away in the corner of the living room.
“Family and work commitments, along with a busy lifestyle, meant the initial development of ideas took some time to come to fruition.”
The dress was launched in April 2021.
“I aim to provide versatile pieces that empower women to look and feel great while enjoying the outdoors — combining both protection and style.
“Launching Northern Tide has provided me the platform to explore my passions and express my creativity in new and exciting ways.
“I find all aspects of this business fascinating, as they give me the opportunity to stretch my creative muscles — from web design and marketing to product development and relationship building.”
Danielle has an offbeat work history.
Although she has always enjoyed dressmaking and design, she used to work in the drug, alcohol and mental health sectors where she developed and managed outreach programs.
She worked in prisons and rehabilitation centres.
Danielle came to Australia from Britain in 2012.
“I fell in love not only with the country but also with an amazing Aussie. I have now lived in the Northern Territory for over 10 years, where we raise our beautiful boys in a rural setting.
“The word ‘blessed’ hardly captures how grateful I feel for this life.
