WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION AT ESSINGTON

The Northern Territory’s leader in education, The Essington School, is experiencing a surge of enthusiasm and anticipation following the recent appointment of long-term Territorian Paul Nyhuis as the new principal and chief executive.

Mr Nyhuis has immediately embarked on an improvement journey, building on existing strengths, and with the vision of Essington as a world-class school.

He completed his own education in Darwin and earned his Bachelor of Education at Charles Darwin University, previously the Northern Territory University.

His commitment to continuous learning led him to the United States, where he served as a principal intern and obtained a Master’s of Education at Western Washington University.

Mr Nyhuis has held the role of principal in several schools and in a number of corporate executive leadership positions with the NT Department of Education. He was most recently the senior director of education for the Darwin region, supporting principals and schools across Darwin public schools.

As well as new and strengthened leadership at Essington, 2024 has seen the recent relocation of Year 10, 11, and 12 students to the main campus in Rapid Creek for the beginning of the academic year.

This strategic move not only shapes the one school and one campus landscape but also fosters unity and mentorship among students from preschool to Year 12.

The school is also undertaking substantial internal and external upgrades in preparation for the launch of an innovative new Essington Preschool and Day Care. The design represents an environment that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also tailored to support the unique needs and development of young learners. This also supports the excellent ratings Essington holds with Quality Education and Care NT (QECNT).

Essington, with its inclusive and supportive environment, accommodates more than 800 students and offers a seamless world-class educational journey from preschool to year 12.

As the school looks ahead to a future filled with opportunities, the emphasis remains on creating a vibrant and connected community where staff, students and families collaborate to deliver an exceptional educational experience for all.

Essington consistently surpasses other schools in the Territory in NAPLAN, Year 12 results and various academic benchmarks.

The school has introduced innovative programs designed to prioritise the overall wellbeing of students, ensuring all students have the opportunity to achieve individual excellence. The goal is twofold: to equip students with academic and educational excellence, and promising career prospects while shaping them into well-rounded, compassionate, and community-oriented individuals.

The Essington School also offers outstanding learning enrichment programs and boasts brilliant physical education and music programs.

Mr Nyhuis is impressed by the commitment and professionalism of staff at Essington.
