INFRASTRUCTURE BEHIND AMBITION

HOW JACOBS KEEPS THE NT MOVING

Jacobs is a quiet contributor behind many of the Territory’s major projects, land development and enabling infrastructure for government and private sector clients.

It recently celebrated the end of the Northern Territory Training Areas and Ranges Project, where it worked with managing contractor, Sitzler, providing design services from planning through to construction phase support for significant upgrades to Defence Training Areas across the Top End.

The team is working with Land Development Corporation to unlock 53 hectares of new industrial land in a strategic logistics corridor less than 10km from the East Arm Wharf, providing master planning, detailed design and construction management services for the Holtze Industrial Estate.

The Northern Territory’s focus is on attracting new investment aligned to its long-term growth priorities, including in clean energy and digital infrastructure. Its strategic position in the Indo-Pacific, proximity to Asia, abundant natural resources, sparsely populated land and planned enabling infrastructure provides a solid foundation for future development and growth.

Sitting behind the Territory’s growth aspirations are firms like Jacobs, providing multidisciplinary professional services and cross-sector expertise that turn vision into reality, and building confidence that infrastructure projects can be delivered safely, sustainably and on schedule.

Jacobs has been part of the Territory’s growth story for more than 40 years, delivering advisory, planning, engineering, design, environmental and project management services across critical sectors; including defence, resources and energy, transport and infrastructure.

Delivering with local understanding, backed by national and global expertise, is what sets Jacobs apart, according to Jacobs Principal Geospatial Consultant and Northern Territory Office Lead, Annamarie Beraldo.

“Anyone that’s worked here knows delivering critical infrastructure in the Territory isn’t like anywhere else in Australia,” says Beraldo. “For project owners and investors, a team on the ground with local knowledge, experience and supply chain relationships can help reduce delivery risk, improve planning certainty and keep projects moving forward more efficiently.”

Jacobs’ Darwin office is led by people who live and work locally and understand the unique challenges that come with working across the Top End, but they don’t work alone. The firm’s national and global technical bench, including its PA Consulting business, bring additional capability and capacity that keep projects moving forward.

This combination of local, national and global expertise becomes more valuable as project complexity grows and the Northern Territory pursues emerging opportunities in areas such as utility-scale renewable energy and digital technologies, including data centres.

Increasingly, major infrastructure projects include diverse assets. The national defence build-up, including in the Territory, demands coordinated delivery across interconnected enabling infrastructure and logistics projects. Resources projects operating in remote and environmentally challenging conditions are being transformed by digital technologies, automation and emerging quantum applications. Meanwhile, proposed off grid hyperscaler precincts demand more sustainable resource management and effective community engagement.

In this environment, successful delivery increasingly depends on understanding how multiple industries, technologies and stakeholder interests connect and having the capability to respond to the broader needs of each project.

“Jacobs’ local delivery experience and supply chain connections, paired with broad, cross-sector and multidisciplinary expertise, including in industries such as energy and power, data centres and quantum technologies, help give clients and investors the confidence to build in the Top End,” says Beraldo.

As the Territory competes for investment for increasingly complex and capital-intensive projects, confidence may prove its most valuable asset. TQ
