UNEARTHED – BARUNGA NEXT TOP MODELS

Shining a Light on Emerging Talent at Barunga Festival.

The Barunga Festival came alive in dazzling style this year with the success of Next Top Model Unearthed, an initiative that showcased the extraordinary talent of 10 emerging Indigenous models.

Taking to the runway beneath the stars, they captivated a packed crowd with confidence, pride and style.

The models, ranging in age from 14 to 66, were Jaydon Black, Miley Cunningham, Jaida-Marie Fejo, Cedella McGrady, Tyson Matthew Ryan, Iesha Poyner-

Gambley, Davina Puruntatameri, Mia Puruntatameri, Shenala Taylor and Columbiere Tipungwuti.

They brought their own energy and story to the catwalk, wearing stunning pieces crafted by leading Aboriginal art centres, including Injalak Arts, Merrepen Arts, Djilpin Arts, House of Darwin, and Tiwi Arts. From hand-printed fabrics to bold accessories, every detail celebrated culture, country and contemporary Indigenous fashion.

Photography for the project was led by David Blake, now New York and Brisbane-based fashion photographer.

His client list reads like a who’s who of global fashion – Acler, Adidas, Aje, Bassike, Coach, David Yurman, Redken and R.M. Williams, but it was clear at Barunga that his heart remains close to home.

Every image Dave captured during the on-Country shoots reflected the authenticity, warmth and strength of his subjects.

Supporting Dave was Darwin’s own photographer Grace Fox, who is also making a name for herself. She worked alongside Dave and the models with the steady guidance of professional model and mentor Cassie Black, hailing from the Tiwi Islands.

Grace who recently graduated from Brisbane University and came straight from Australian Fashion week, shot her images on film. Together Dave and Grace, nurtured the young talent, providing invaluable advice on posing, movement and self-presentation.

The models were also treated to professional makeup sessions from a makeup artist from Mecca, Alice Cirrottola, ensuring they felt their absolute best before stepping into the spotlight. Renowned performer Madame Zuzu also mentored the models, working alongside them for the entire process.

Adding to the magic was Nhulunbuy- based Susie Alderman from Lazy Susan, who flew in with her sewing machine and transformed fabrics from the art centres into bespoke fashion pieces, dresses and tops, paired with accessories made by local Indigenous artists.

A key achievement of the project was the creation of professional look books for each model, portfolios of editorial-style photographs taken on Country, which the participants can now use to pursue further work in the fashion industry.

For many, it was the first step toward new opportunities in modelling, media and creative arts. Creating opportunities that have impact beyond the event itself is a key directive of the traditional elders and Bagala Aboriginal Corporation board who are custodians of the festival.

The culmination of the project came at 7:30pm on Barunga’s festival stage, where the models took to the catwalk before an awe-struck audience. As they moved with confidence, grace and purpose, the crowd responded with cheers, applause and admiration. For some in the audience, it was the first time seeing a fashion show woven so powerfully with culture and identity.

As one festival-goer said: “It felt like we were watching the future of Indigenous fashion unfold right before our eyes – it was unforgettable.”

Festival Director Anya Lorimer from Sprout says: “In the spirit of Barunga Festival, Next Top Model Unearthed wasn’t just about style – it was about empowerment, opportunity and pride.

“It’s a reminder that the Territory continues to lead the way in creating platforms where young Indigenous talent can shine. It was a large undertaking, and we are looking for sponsors for 2026 to continue the program. And if any other community or festival would like us to swing in and help co-ordinate your event
or a model program to unearth raw Territory talent – please reach out.” TQ
