THRIVING TOGETHER

An award winning Aboriginal-owned chartered accounting firm that specialises in Indigenous business has seemingly gone against all …. well, all standard accounting practices. And succeeded.

Darwin-based Together Business is one of only a handful of Indigenous-owned accounting firms in Australia and the only one in the Northern Territory.

It is the only Australian accounting firm to win the prestigious Xero Community Partner of the Year award two years running.

Sarah Hyland founded Together Business in 2019 when she was pregnant with her second child and had a toddler at her feet.

“It was a busy time, but I was determined to make it work,” she says.

“I started Together Business to prove that success isn’t just about making money. It’s about how we relate to each other, treat each other, and succeed together.

“I was angry that mainstream accounting valued profits over people and relationships. So, I decided to do things differently, and fill a gap in the market that I couldn’t ignore anymore, using my skills to support First Nations people in navigating the world of business.

“We focus less on money and more on outcomes, such as client understanding and what is ethically right.

“We tailor our approach to each business’s unique challenges as one size certainly doesn’t fit all. We believe in being genuine, which makes our model just as profitable and more impactful.”

Clients come from various industries, but the firm specialises in serving social enterprises.

“While there isn’t such a thing as a ‘social enterprise’ as far as legal structures go, we work across for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, assisting all legal structures that exist within Australia.

“From conservation to the arts, retail, and education, we work with a diverse range of businesses, so there’s always something new and interesting happening.

“We’re proud of the mix of clients we have, especially the fact that 90 percent of our clients are First Nations businesses.

“Our goal is to be the top choice for Indigenous entrepreneurs looking for expert business advice and tax services.”

The work is a good mix of advising and tax accounting.

Together Business offers accounting services such as ACNC compliance, tax planning, company incorporation and bookkeeping to ensure smooth day-to-day operations for businesses.

As well as BAS, IAS, tax returns, and financial statements, the firm offers advisory services where they work closely with clients to support their goals and help them make informed financial decisions.

The company offers financial awareness coaching, virtual CFO services, cash-flow improvement coaching, and management coaching.

The not-for-profit arm, Together Academy, offers workshops and programs tailored to suit the needs of individuals and groups.

The workshops cover financial literacy and money mindset tailored for different audiences.
