THE UNSUNG HEROES

One of the most critical roles in any construction project is the quantity surveyor – the unsung hero who costs all the materials, labour, equipment, risks and margins to ensure projects stack up and are financially successful for all involved parties.

Poorly considered cost estimates and assessments can be disastrous for clients and the community at large.

QS Services has proven itself to be a first-class operator by delivering various significant multi-million-dollar projects since being established in 1990.

It collaborates with construction companies – estimating costs for their projects – and also with developers, clients and financiers, cross-checking and reviewing costs for accuracy and reasonableness.

QS Services worked directly to Charles Darwin University for their award-winning, eight-storey Danala Education Community Precinct in Darwin city, and is working for the Northern Territory Government on the redevelopment of State Square Art Gallery, and the City of Darwin on the new Civic Centre.

“These are all significant, landmark projects across the skyline of Darwin,” says company Director and Manager Paul Gurr.

QS Services, one of the largest quantity surveyors in the Territory, also worked on the Palmerston Hospital and the new prison at Holtze.

The quantity surveying and cost consultancy business worked successfully with Sitzler on the Defence Naval Communications Base at Exmouth, more than 1100 kilometres north of Perth.

The remoteness of Exmouth and the world-class demands of the Department of Defence and the United States in delivering a space surveillance telescope base made it one of the most challenging projects in Australia at the time.

QS Services has continued to work very closely with Sitzler since being founded by Charles Wright.

“They are always a pleasure to work with – very professional,” says Mr Gurr, who before joining QS Services in 2023 worked for Sitzler for 13 years.

“I know whole heartedly the ‘Sitzler Way’ of doing business; entirely professional, they always do what they say they will do. There is never a project or problem too complex, instilling strong confidence throughout the volatile construction industry they deliver.”

He says Managing Director Steve Margetic and Director Michael Sitzler are “extremely open, honest and transparent”.

“We work hand in glove with them. It’s a very cherished and respected collaborative relationship between the two businesses.

“We all have the same aim – to achieve the best outcome for the end users, and we’re willing to work very hard to deliver this.”

Mr Wright, who sold QS Services to Ralph and Beattie Bosworth in 2021, had a close relationship with Mr Margetic in Sitzler’s earlier years.

“Steve would often source out Charles for advice on matters he considered complex, relying on the knowledge and experience of a renowned quantity surveying practitioner.”

Mr Gurr accepts that quantity surveyors are the quiet achievers of the construction industry.

“But our job is also one of great importance,” he says.

QS Services and their parent entity, Ralph & Beattie Bosworth, employs a team of more than 50 staff across offices in Darwin, Perth and Melbourne. TQ
