RELIABILITY, SAFETY AND COMMUNITY
In August, INPEX Australia commenced its largest planned maintenance shutdown since the Ichthys LNG facilities began operations in 2018.

This shutdown underpins our commitment to safe, reliable production and investment in the Northern Territory.
The planned maintenance involves the shutdown of Ichthys LNG offshore and onshore facilities to service key pieces of infrastructure and equipment including the Ichthys Explorer – our central processing facility – and the Ichthys Venturer, which supports floating production, storage and offloading and our onshore processing facility based here in Darwin.
These critical works support continued safe and reliable operations at Ichthys LNG for our workers and the communities in which we operate.
As part of our commitment to safety, we have also completed seabed levelling at our product offloading jetty in Darwin Harbour. This process levels out sediment that has gradually built up over time due to the harbour’s large tidal movements, which can affect the moveability of vessels to berth and depart safely.
More than $200 million is being spent on maintenance activities at the Darwin-based Ichthys LNG facility. This investment flows into the local economy, supporting 22 local businesses, contracted to provide essential support and services, and creating jobs for an additional 1,000 onshore workers who will be accommodated at Bladin Village.
Safety is always our top priority. Our Perfect Day campaign, where $500 is donated to employee nominated charities for each day that work health and safety targets are met, continues to inspire a strong safety culture across our facilities. Charities within the Ichthys LNG footprint in Darwin, Broome and Perth can benefit from this engaging initiative during the maintenance shutdown period.
Executing a maintenance shutdown of this scale is a complex undertaking made possible with the skills and services provided by local businesses, contractors and our Ichthys LNG workforce. INPEX is proud to contribute to the Territory and foster local capability through jobs, training and long-term community partnerships.
Beyond our operations, our community investment strategy is anchored in four priority areas:
- education, training, and skills development
- health and wellbeing
- local business capacity building
- community connectivity.
Here in the Territory, the INPEX-led Ichthys Joint Venture continues to nurture impactful partnerships, including the SHAK youth hub led by Anglicare NT, Foodbank SA&NT’s School Breakfast Program, the Starlight Foundation Express Room at Royal Darwin Hospital, Hoops 4 Health, Charles Darwin University and many more – each reflecting our commitment to supporting social impact, career opportunities and community needs.
Looking ahead, INPEX Australia plays a pivotal role in delivering our global strategy, Vision 2035 – Realising a Responsible Energy Transition. This long-term roadmap outlines our focus on:
- Expanding LNG production
- Advancing low-carbon solutions, including carbon capture and storage (CCS)
- Exploring new energy sector opportunities.
In line with this vision, we’re also actively investing in renewable energy. In 2023, INPEX acquired a 50 per cent stake in Potentia Energy, gaining access to wind and solar assets across Australia.
With abundant natural resources and significant potential for CCS, the Northern Territory should continue to play a critical role in the energy transition. INPEX is proud to be part of the Territory’s vibrancy, as we play our part in a responsible energy transition.
