Reef to five-star rooftop
Just over an hour’s flight from Darwin lies a destination many travellers have barely discovered, yet those who do rarely forget it. Welcome to Dili — the relaxed coastal capital of Timor-Leste and what I like to call the Land of Smiles.
SKI TRIP #2
Territory Q is bringing you a SKI series (Spend the Kids’ Inheritance) luxury destinations. Dili is no a place you think of as 5 star and we heard there was a new hotel recently opened that has hosted diplomats, Prime Ministers and loads of embassey corporates so went and checked it out. Dili is a place a have been to several times and it never disappoints.
I’ve travelled to Dili many times over the past 15 years and covered it in TQ as an emerging tourism destination but this time I’ve experience 5 star.
For Territorians who feel they’ve “done Bali” a few too many times, Dili offers something refreshingly different. It’s raw, welcoming, and full of character, an emerging tourism destination where adventure, culture and simple pleasures blend together effortlessly. There are no mega resorts dominating the coastline, no crowded beach clubs competing for attention. Instead, Dili rewards travellers who arrive with curiosity, patience and a spirit of exploration.
And the smiles? They’re everywhere.
From the moment you land, the warmth of the Timorese people becomes immediately apparent. Life moves at a gentler pace here. Conversations linger, laughter is easy, and visitors are greeted not as strangers but as guests discovering a country still proudly writing the next chapters of its story.
Dili is also an ideal gateway for adventure seekers. The waters surrounding the island are among the most pristine in Southeast Asia, making the region a world-class diving destination. Just offshore, vibrant coral reefs flourish in clear blue water where reef fish dart through coral gardens and larger marine life makes regular appearances. Between September and November, lucky divers and snorkellers may even encounter migrating whales passing along the Timor trench.

Just a short boat ride away lies the spectacular Atauro Island, a place often described as one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. Here, the pace slows even further. Traditional fishing villages dot the coastline, mountains rise dramatically from the sea, and the diving is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s the sort of place where travellers come for a day and end up staying longer. If you are a diver then Atauro is already a place on your bucket list. I have been quoted before saying it’s better diving here than the Maldives and I stick by that. If you want to drive with the whales the season is August to November.
Back on the mainland, the adventure continues. Dirt bike riders will find endless tracks weaving through the hills beyond the capital. These dusty trails lead through villages, coconut plantations and dramatic mountain ridges that open to coastal views. For hikers, the terrain offers rewarding challenges, from coastal walks to rugged climbs where the reward at the summit is a panoramic view across the Timor Sea. Recommend booking small tours with Intrepid. They are global and do Timor well.

Yet Dili isn’t only about adrenaline and exploration, it’s also quietly becoming known as a foodie destination.
Dining in Timor-Leste comes with a simple rule, be flexible. Menus often reflect what is fresh and available that day rather than a rigid list of options. Seafood might arrive straight from the morning catch, vegetables from nearby farms, and spices reflecting Portuguese, Indonesian and local influences. The one thing that is worth raving about is the coffee – totally worth a trip in itself.
Personally, I’ve adopted the strategy of simply letting the chef choose. It’s a small act of trust that almost always pays off. A plate of grilled fish with lime and chilli, a slow-cooked curry, freshly baked bread or a surprising fusion dish. The culinary rewards of Dili often come when you surrender expectations and embrace whatever arrives from the kitchen.
As Dili continues to grow as a destination, its hospitality scene is evolving too. Leading the way is the impressive Palm Springs Hotel Dili, the city’s first true five-star hotel and a standout addition to the capital’s skyline.
Rising nine floors above the city, Palm Springs Hotel offers a contemporary haven for travellers seeking comfort, convenience and a touch of luxury in the heart of Dili. Its central location places guests within easy reach of key embassies, international agencies and major government ministries — making it particularly appealing for corporate and diplomatic travellers.
The hotel features 150 thoughtfully designed rooms, including four spacious suites. Each room blends modern interior design with practical comfort you expect from a 5 star hotel. Sleek interiors, generous layouts, reliable wi-fi, flat-screen televisions, minibars, work desks and even bedroom robes and slipper, a welcome sense of relaxation I desperately needed.

Dining is another highlight. Palm Springs offers three distinctive venues, including the stylish rooftop bar and grill Sail, where sweeping views across Dili set the stage for sunset cocktails and relaxed evening meals. As the sun dips into the Timor Sea, the rooftop transforms into one of the city’s most enjoyable social spaces — ideal for happy hour drinks, client dinners or simply soaking up the view.
The hotel also caters strongly to meetings and conferences, offering 670 square metres of flexible event space equipped with modern technology.
After the start to the year I have had, this trip was a mixture of business, adventure and the opportunity to recharge. The hotel beds are like lying on a cloud and I spent lots of time just sleeping. A 90-minute full body massage down the road that Sara and I rated in the top 10 of all time was just $30USD and worth returning for everyday.
Whether visitors arrive for business or adventure, Palm Springs Hotel provides a polished base from which to explore this fascinating city.
And that’s the beauty of Dili.
It’s a place where emerging tourism meets genuine hospitality. Coral reefs, mountain trails, surprising food and warm smiles combine to create a destination still refreshingly untouched.
For travellers willing to try somewhere new, the Land of Smiles is waiting.
