NTEX TURNS TRASH INTO TREASURE
NTEX started life as a standard civil construction and demolition company in 2010.
But over the past four years founder Gerry Breen has pivoted the business to be experts in the circular economy. NTEX are taking one man’s trash and literally turning it into treasure, recycling and repurposing on average over 90 percent of the waste from their demolition projects.
They’ve also moved away from straight civil construction and become experts in environmental remediation, solving some of the trickier contamination problems in the Northern Territory.
NTEX has totally changed how demolition is approached in the NT. By introducing pre-demolition auditing they ensure that any hazardous materials and contaminants are identified and managed correctly, and that options for material resource recovery and recycling are identified before any project begins.
They track all waste material flows through their projects from the start of demolition right through to the end user.
“This data shows that we average above 90 percent resource recovery rate across all our projects, with some achieving as high as 98 percent,” says Gerry.
For instance, the Larrakia Cultural Centre demolition project achieved strong environmental outcomes, ensuring the project had a resource recovery rate of 95.27 percent, against an average of 60-80 percent on other projects across Australia.
NTEX achieved a big goal this year by opening a dedicated resource recovery and recycling facility in East Arm – their flagship project NTEX Code Red, which now accepts waste concrete from local contractors, which it remanufactures into Australian specification recycled aggregate to sell back to industry.
Additionally, the facility offers Northern Territory’s first tyre recycling service.
“We have invested heavily in state-ofthe- art recycling technology, the first of its kind in Australia, which allows us to recycle waste concrete, removing reinforced metal bars and plastics, repurposing the crushed material into high-quality aggregates for use in civil projects.”
NTEX’s newest Arjes Titan 900 shretdder, another Australian first, can recycle four different waste streams – concrete, green waste, light steel and car bodies, as well as tyres.
“What’s exciting about this technology is that NTEX can now provide a more affordable mobile solution for waste recycling in regional and remote communities across the NT.”
Examples of the circular economy in action between NTEX and Territory businesses include:
• City of Darwin – recently supported Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility to reduce the environmental footprint of their tyre waste by recycling more than 500 tonnes for beneficial reuse.
• Sitzler – the NTEX Code Red recycling facility took delivery of 1720 tonne of waste concrete out of the Tiger Brennan overpass project from Sitzler, recycling and remanufacturing it into type 2 aggregate. In turn, Sitzler bought 1400 tonne of the recycled material for a hardstand laydown yard in Berrimah.
• C-Twelve NT – a forward-thinking company headed by NT Neil Sunners dedicated to revolutionising road construction and maintenance with eco-friendly and carbon-negative solutions. C-Twelve and NTEX are collaborating to use the Code Red recycled concrete aggregate in combination with biochar and C-Twelve’s proprietary binder technology. This innovative technology produces a road surfacing material that outperforms traditional hot-mix asphalt while sequestering carbon at an unmatched rate in the industry.
NTEX’s first large-scale use of this circular economy product is for Auriga Marine based in East Arm, where they are installing 26,000m3 of the material for yard redevelopment.
With a “solutions, not problems” mindset, NTEX are at the forefront of developing new methods for contaminant sequestration in recycled concrete.
This involves capturing and neutralising harmful substances within the concrete, making it safe for reuse and reducing the need for interstate transportation for disposal. Their research in this area is continuing, and they aim to establish NTEX as a leader in sustainable contaminant management.
Sustainability is at the absolute core of how NTEX operates. They have had massive positive impacts on their industry and stakeholders in the NT, being an example of how business can develop community and environmental initiatives that also benefit profitability – the triple bottom line.
NTEX is not just a demolition and recycling company; it is a beacon of innovation, and sustainability in the Northern Territory. By turning demolition waste into valuable resources and driving the circular economy, NTEX is reshaping the future of the industry, proving that even the most destructive sectors can be forces for good.
“For a small business, we really are thinking big,” says Gerry. “NTEX is quite literally reshaping the Territory.”
