NGS: WHERE TRUST MEETS EXCELLENCE

A new state-of-the-art factory is transforming one of the world’s greatest assets – glass.

Northern Glass Solutions – better known as NGS – has commissioned a purpose-built processing plant at Darwin East Arm Business Park.

The business is positioning itself as a leader in the high-performance, energy-efficient and safe production of glass for commercial, industrial and residential applications across Northern Australia and broader Asia-Pacific regions.

Specialising in glass engineered for the region’s harsh climate and demanding structural conditions, the new plant features world‑class automation and precision technology.

The airy, open-plan facility, which is set on 10,000 square metres of land with 6300 square metres under cover, has been designed for scale, efficiency and future growth.

The production plant’s capabilities are extraordinary.

In an eight-hour shift, NGS can cut and toughen about 1000 square metres of glass, enough to supply 20 houses, and produce 350 square metres of double-glazing.

The plant can also cut a sheet size of 3.66 metres wide and 2.44 metres long into standard residential window panels in less than 12 seconds.

A specially engineered robotic display system in the foyer demonstrates the company’s advanced glass performance capabilities.

One exhibit shows how NGS’s high‑performance glazing can reduce heat penetration from severe to very low — a vital advantage in Northern Australia’s extreme climate.

Another highlights the remarkable acoustic qualities of the company’s double‑glazed products, which are capable of blocking out music played at about 100 decibels – a level of sound reduction highly valued in multi‑storey residential and commercial developments where noise control is essential.

The robotic display also highlights the wide range of bespoke glass panel combinations the factory can produce. It’s a true paradise for architects and engineers, offering an interactive way to assess physical attributes and performance characteristics across multiple glass types — all in real time and all in one place.

The company’s product suite includes float, safety, security, acoustic, energy‑efficient and decorative glass. Beyond standard offerings, each panel can be customised and optimised to meet specific client requirements.

NGS designed and constructed the $21 million glass manufacturing facility. The company employs 12 staff, which is expected to rise as production and orders continue to grow.

The project received a $668,000 co‑investment grant from the federal Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund.

NGS owner Lee, who has worked in the construction industry for more than 20 years, says: “This project represents more than bricks and mortar, It represents belief – belief in Territory capability, belief in local manufacturing, and belief in backing our industry to build something bigger and better for the region.

“For far too long, specialised glass products travelled more than 3000 kilometres to reach the Northern Territory, causing the supply delay, long lead times and high costs, Today, that changes.

“Northern Glass Solutions was founded with a clear purpose: to deliver wide ranges of high-quality glazing products with shorter lead time and affordable prices.

“This facility gives us capability to manufacture advanced products for both the NT and broader Australian market.

“It also strengthens the supply chain resilience for construction, defence and mining projects across the north.”

NGS are thankful to the Northern Territory Government for their confidence in the project and to the Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund for its co-investment.

“Your partnership has been crucial in making this facility a reality.

“This investment is not just for the project — it is an investment in local capability, local innovation and the long-term growth of advanced manufacturing in the Territory.

“We are grateful for your confidence in our vision and for your commitment to expanding NT manufacturing capabilities.”

Locally produced glass offers significant advantages: products are engineered to withstand the harsh Northern Australia environment, deliver superior insulation and safety, and reduce reliance on interstate imports. This cuts transport costs, avoids supply delays, and ensures reliable availability for Territory and regional construction.

Mr Lee, who has lived in Darwin for 20 years, wants to help keep money in the Northern Territory by manufacturing locally.

“We are deeply passionate about contributing to the growth and development of the Northern Territory,” he says. “By supporting local initiatives and fostering relationships within the community, we aim to create a positive impact that extends beyond our products.” TQ
