Michael Assan and his partner Kate Coggan launched their crane company for two good reasons – to fill a critical gap in the Northern Territory for high-quality services and to provide employment opportunities for Indigenous workers.

“We are committed to delivering exceptional service while empowering local communities,” says Michael, a proud Aboriginal man born in Katherine and a member of the Wakka Wakka tribe in Central Queensland .

He has more than 15 years experience working on prestigious projects across Australia, including renewable energy installations and mining operations.

Services offered by Mick’s Cranes Australia include:

  • Crane hire (wet and dry)
  • Specialised lift planning and execution
  • Logistical support for construction and infrastructure projects

The company’s fleet includes a 110-tonne slew crane, 25-tonne crane and a three tonne telehandler.

Mick has experience in working on specialised lifts for large-scale renewable energy infrastructure on the Snowy hydro system in New South Wales and heavy lifting and logistics for gas infrastructure projects in the Pilbara in Western Australia.

“We operate a modern fleet of well-maintained machinery, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient lifting solutions for projects of any size,” says Michael.

“Our team of certified crane operators and riggers are experts in their field. They have the knowledge and experience necessary to handle even the most complex jobs with ease.”

Mick’s Cranes overcomes the challenging logistics of working on remote projects.

“The work requires extensive planning and efficient equipment transportation.”

Michael and Kate say that providing job opportunities for local and Indigenous workers and contributing to the growth of the Katherine region is “incredibly rewarding”.

“Owning MCA allows us to shape a business that aligns with our values of community, safety and excellence,” says Kate.

“We are dedicated to training and upskilling employees.”

Future plans include expanding the fleet, growing the company’s presence in the NT by securing larger contracts, creating more employment opportunities for Indigenous workers, and strengthening training programs to prepare workers for jobs in the crane and construction industries
