McMAHON SERVICES

TRUSTED TO DELIVER. BUILT FOR THE TERRITORY.

For nearly three decades, McMahon Services has been delivering complex civil, construction, demolition and environmental projects across the Northern Territory, building a reputation for capability, reliability and performance in some of Australia’s most demanding environments.

From its first project in 1998, the demolition of Darwin’s Stokes Hill Power Station, the company has grown into a major Territory contractor, operating across Defence, Resources and remote community infrastructure with the scale and expertise to deliver end-to-end solutions.

Today, McMahon Services operates from Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs and Gove, supporting projects across the entire NT, from major Defence installations to some of the most remote communities in Australia.

That long-standing presence, combined with national capability, enables the business to mobilise quickly, manage complex logistics and deliver with certainty across multiple disciplines.

“Clients trust us to deliver, safely, professionally and without compromise,” says Territory Executive General Manager Mick Laidler. “That trust has been built over time through consistent performance and strong relationships.”

Over the past five years alone, McMahon Services NT has delivered more than $200 million in Defence projects across all major bases, including Larrakeyah, RAAF Tindal, Robertson Barracks, Berrimah and RAAF Darwin, as well as other high-security installations.

The company’s pipeline includes approximately $250 million of work, including the large-scale remediation of the Rum Jungle uranium mine south of Darwin, a landmark project involving seven years of civil works followed by 12 years of water treatment.

“It’s a significant, long-term project that’s creating real opportunities for local contractors and Aboriginal employment,” Mr Laidler says.

McMahon Services’ strength lies in its ability to deliver across the full project lifecycle, from early works and demolition through to construction, remediation and environmental management, providing clients with a single, integrated delivery partner.

Creating long-term value for communities is a core focus, supported by the company’s partnership with Indigenous-owned Intract Australia.

Together, the businesses deliver tenancy management services for 1,200 homes across 13 Top End communities, employing around 100 staff, many of them Aboriginal workers, and contributing to sustainable economic participation.

On projects such as Rum Jungle, local Warrai and Kungarakan trainees are gaining hands-on experience, developing practical skills that will benefit their communities for years to come.

Supporting local businesses is embedded in McMahon Services’ approach.

“All our people and subcontractors are Territorians,” Mr Laidler says. “From larger operators to family-run businesses, we prioritise local involvement on every project.”

Where specialised capability is required, McMahon Services partners with expert providers while actively working alongside them to transfer knowledge and build capability within the local workforce.

“It’s important that we don’t just deliver the project — we leave behind stronger skills and greater capacity in the Territory,” Mr Laidler says.

Operating in remote environments requires detailed planning and strong logistical capability, an area where McMahon Services has significant experience.

During construction of the Hermannsburg Service Centre, located 130 kilometres west of Alice Springs, all materials, equipment and resources were carefully sourced, coordinated and transported from multiple locations.

“There’s no nearby supplier, everything has to be planned and delivered with precision,” Mr Laidler says.

That capability extends to rapid response, particularly in high-risk environments. When called on to address a major asbestos issue across several Alice Springs schools, McMahon Services mobilised immediately and resolved the issue safely within a short timeframe.

“We specialise in complex, high-risk work, particularly demolition and asbestos removal,” Mr Laidler says. “That’s where our expertise really stands out.”

The company’s breadth of work also includes high-profile urban projects, such as the demolition of a prominent Darwin CBD site formerly home to the iconic Throb nightclub, as well as specialised construction and fit-out works at Darwin International Airport.

“Our regional footprint has allowed us to expand our work right across the Territory, particularly in remote areas,” Mr Laidler says.

As demand continues to grow, McMahon Services is focused on attracting skilled professionals to the NT, including project managers, engineers, contract administrators and site managers.

“We offer strong career opportunities, rewarding projects and a solid pipeline of work,” he says.

Beyond project delivery, the company is committed to supporting the communities in which it operates, backing local charities, sporting clubs and grassroots organisations, and supporting industry initiatives such as the National Association of Women in Construction awards.

McMahon Services has also partnered with SEDA College to help develop the Territory’s future workforce, providing students with hands-on exposure to the construction industry, practical skills and mentorship.

Founded in 1990 by brothers David and Andrew McMahon, McMahon Services has grown into one of Australia’s leading civil, environmental and construction service providers.

In the Northern Territory, that growth is underpinned by experience, capability and a clear focus, delivering complex projects with certainty, strengthening local partnerships, and creating lasting value for the region TQ
