LEARNING LIFE LESSONS

The Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre, which opened in 2015, was designed to deliver positive outcomes to Indigenous students from regional and remote areas, harnessing one of Australia's most popular sporting codes, Australian Rules Football.

The program provides young Indigenous Territorians with the same opportunities as other students living in urban zones – promoting leadership, education, self-development programs, health and wellbeing, and employment opportunities.

Importantly, students taking part are reporting an increase in their motivation and confidence.

Students take part in exercises to prepare for the camps. There are 10 sessions available through a learning hub.

The INPEX-led Ichthys Joint Venture supports initiatives such as the AFLNT’s Camp Program where students are nominated by their schools as a reward for strong attendance and promoting a positive attitude.

Threading AFL into the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre’s programs means students gain valuable lessons through experiential learning and can apply the lessons to their education, training, employment and life choices.

A focus of the program has been helping students make strong and positive choices in their lives by taking part in physical fitness, wellbeing and mental health activities by providers, including Balanced Choice, Menzies Health and Headspace.

Community and industry support for the centre is essential and goes beyond just financial aid.

INPEX General Manager Northern Territory Richard Finch is proud of the long-standing support they have offered the program.

“A highlight for the INPEX team has been the opportunity to participate as volunteers in the awards sessions at the camps,” he says. “It means a lot for our people to support local community engagement and sponsorship programs.”

Centre education programs lead Christian Thiel says: “The support from INPEX plays a valuable role in helping us deliver our programs, and we appreciate their continued involvement.

“Their support has been instrumental in providing opportunities for these students to thrive and unlock their full potential.”
