KALON HOMES: BEAUTY WITHIN

Anna and Nick Kazouris wanted to let the world know that the houses they build are beautiful in every way.

So they named their Darwin-based business Kalon Homes – Kalon means “beauty within” in Greek.

The company has lived up to its name since it was founded in 2019 by building lovely family houses with stylish interiors.

A three-bedroom show house on the Northcrest residential estate in Darwin is like Dr Who’s Tardis, seemingly much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside – and complete with what must be the most elegant, cleverly-designed utility room in the Territory.

Anna, who is company managing director and one of very few female registered builders in Australia, says: “We build homes that are not only beautiful inside and out, but are structurally sound – they are built to last.

“We are committed to excellence.”

She is excited about the NT Government’s $50,000 grant for first-homebuyers.

“It will encourage more people to own their dream home,” she says.

Kalon Homes is already building a couple of houses at Northcrest – and hopes to build many more as the estate expands.

The company has five designs, but most of its homes are customised by clients.

“Everyone has different needs and tastes, so people ask us to change the design to suit them,” says Anna. “We’re happy to go along with them. We want them to be happy.

“We know what it’s like to struggle to buy a home. We’ve been on that journey ourselves and are ready to go on it with our clients.”

Kalon Homes, which works with a group of tried and trusted subcontractors, has built up a strong reputation for builder-client collaboration.

The company’s building and finance process is transparent, informative and streamlined – from the initial stages to project completion, every aspect of the process is thoroughly explained, allowing customers to have a clear understanding of what to expect.

Detailed transparent quotes are provided, outlining the costs and expenses associated with the project.

The quotes leave no room for ambiguity or surprises, which allows clients to make informed decisions and plan their finances properly.

Anna, who won the HIA 2023 Building Woman of the Year and the HIA 2023 Professional Business Woman awards, has worked in the construction industry for more than 25 years.

She has a Certificate IV in Building and Construction, and spends much of her time on-site in her hi-viz vest.

“Some people are still surprised to see me on the building site. They expect me to be a radical feminist, but I’m not – I’m a mum with four boys and him,” she says pointing to Nick.

“And that’s why I’m not a feminist – I’m surrounded by strong magnificent men onsite and at home.

“It’s a male-dominated industry and there’s nothing wrong with that. It should be celebrated. Women sometimes just need to work extra hard to be part of it and most men will see a woman’s strengths and respect them.”

Anna mentors tradies and plays a key role in encouraging not only women but all upcoming skillseekers to join the construction industry.

“That’s my passion and commitment.”

Nick was born in Darwin but was taken to Greece by his parents immediately after Cyclone Tracy in 1974, only to return for good at the age of 23.

He has more than 30 years experience in the construction industry and is a highly skilled business owner, site supervisor and subcontractor.

Nick, who has extensive expertise and qualifications as a solid renderer and plasterer, oversees and manages construction projects with precision and dedication, ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship.

His wife says: “I’m proud of him – he’s got the smarts.”
