DICE: EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Northern Territory-born Ray Pratt went into business to challenge himself.

But that motivation soon evolved into something bigger – not only to succeed in business but to help Indigenous people help themselves.
His motto is: power communities and empower people.
Mr Pratt is the owner of construction company Dice, which has won a string of major projects across Northern Australia, including building homes on Indigenous communities.
He was named Northern Territory Business Owner of the Year at the NT Indigenous Business Network awards in 2024.
“Initially, I started out to challenge myself, to see what I could achieve in business,” he says. “I was driven to address gaps in the industry and wanted to create my own based around quality, reliability and community impact.
“The vision and mission have transitioned over time.
“The motivation stemmed from a desire to create opportunities — not just for myself but for others in our community.
“I wanted to build a company that reflected my Western Arrernte heritage while demonstrating that Indigenous businesses can excel in highly technical fields.”
Mr Pratt became a sole trader in 2004 and launched Dice as a company three years later.
“I wanted to build on a solid foundation of experience from working in my father’s business and had a vision to become a top-tier electrical contractor in the Northern Territory and to look at growing beyond. The business has grown steadily.”
He is now one of the most successful Indigenous business owners in Australia.
Dice offers a wide range of services.
It is known as a leading electrical contractor, but has grown into a construction company with a strong electrical contracting division and an innovative Smart Energy division.
“We’ve been busy delivering as a head contractor to Defence and government sectors, while also supporting other businesses as a subcontractor.
“Additionally, we continue to complete high volumes of maintenance work at a commercial scale and for everyday clients in the general public.
“Our reputation as a trusted provider is complemented by our Indigenous heritage, which brings a unique perspective on community and collaboration.”
Mr Pratt says the most rewarding part of owning Dice is creating a legacy.
“It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the tangible impact we’ve made — whether it’s employing local talent, mentoring the next generation of tradies and professionals, or supporting community projects.
“It’s a privilege to know that what we’ve built inspires others, especially fellow Indigenous entrepreneurs, to pursue their own business ambitions.”
Dice employs more than 70 full-time staff.
“Our team is the backbone of our success, and I’m proud to see them thrive, grow their skills, and contribute to our shared vision.
“Although I often get credited with Dice’s achievements, the truth is that the team deserves the accolades. Their talent, dedication and hard work are what make our success possible.
“Ultimately, the goal is to continue growing in a way that stays true to our roots while pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve in business and highlight what an Indigenous business can achieve.
“We’re constantly expanding the fields we excel in.”
