DESIGNING DREAMS

JAN-MARIE'S VISION TRANSFORMS SPACES AND LIVES

Award-winning designer Jan-Marie Jaillei strongly believes that she didn’t choose interior architecture as her career – it chose her through what she calls a “series of serendipitous life events”.

“I have never had any doubt that it’s exactly where I’m meant to be. I’m grateful that I had found my gift – or calling, as you might say.”

Jan-Marie owns Darwin-based JMJ Interiors, which offers a full-service interior design experience tailored to busy professionals and business owners who may not have the time to manage renovations or the design and build process.

The firm specialises in turnkey fit-outs for residential and commercial spaces, ensuring a seamless and stress-free transformation.

The studio in Darwin is known for creating thoughtfully designed interiors that reflect the unique character of each home, business and client.

“While our focus is on residential interiors, our expertise extends to a wide range of styles, from modern tropical to relaxed coastal and luxury aesthetics,” says Jan-marie.

“Our design philosophy is rooted in the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui, emphasising harmony between the environment and the human experience.

“Inspired by the natural landscape around us, we tailor each project to the specific needs and desires of our clients, anticipating how you live and what you love to create a space that elevates your lifestyle.

“In an ever-changing world, where renovation costs have surged in recent years, we remain committed to finding innovative design solutions that add value to your home or business. Let us help you bring your dream space to life.”

Jan-Marie draws on 25 years experience around the world to create beautiful homes and workplaces.

JMJ Interiors projects include the stunning Litchfield Outback Resort, the stylish Thrive Property, the welcoming YouthworX training hub and a suite of gorgeous homes.

“I absolutely love the ever-changing diversity of the projects,” Jan-marie says. “No two are the same, which gives me fresh enthusiasm when researching, sourcing and dreaming up new concepts.

“I love working with clients to realise their ideal living or working environments, helping them to manage their financial investment for their projects and taking control of the concept to completion.

“I enjoy working with my trades and team of contractors to bring my concept to life and I get to see firsthand the impact my designs have on people, whether it is a working or living environment, and that is so satisfying to witness”.

Jan-Marie has led an exciting life – surviving Cyclone Tracy, modelling in Hong Kong and New York, trekking to Everest base camp in the Himalayas, living in London for 15 years and, most important of all, having three great kids.

But wherever she roamed, Darwin was always home and she returned in 2014 to start what is now a thriving business.

Jan-Marie was born in Queensland but moved to Darwin when she was seven, only to endure the terror of Cyclone Tracy two years later.

“I have a vivid memory of waking up to armageddon. No house, no belongings, only the clothes on our backs. Living in PJs for days and becoming somewhat of a refugee, relying on handouts and the charity of others to see us through to our relatives in Queensland.

JAN-MARIE JAILLEI … ‘OUR EXPERTISE EXTENDS TO A WIDE RANGE OF STYLES, FROM MODERN TROPICAL TO RELAXED COASTAL AND LUXURY AESTHETICS’

“Our family returned to Darwin after the cyclone to help with the rebuild of the city. For me this experience will be one of my life’s most defining, knowing that even when I have nothing I can and will survive, so I began to dream big with the faith that I had nothing to lose.”

Jan-Marie stayed in Darwin until just after her 20th birthday when she was offered a modelling contract in Hong Kong.

“I had the time of my life but knew it wasn’t a forever career for me”.

She gave up modelling after a while but stayed in Hong Kong to work in sales and marketing for a hotel chain. Jan-Marie then moved to London, where her three children, Sienna, Francesca and Gabriel, were born.

She studied interior architecture at the Prestige Inchbald School of Design in London and holds a diploma in architectural feng shui from the Design Institute of New York City.

She is the NT/SA deputy branch councillor for the Design institute of Australia and an accredited member of the Kitchen and Bathroom Association.

After half a lifetime of travelling overseas, the Northern Territory beckoned.

“I enjoy the laid-back lifestyle of Darwin and have found great joy in building my interior design business here”.
