CREATING STRONGER FUTURES

GTNT Group, the Northern Territory’s largest group training organisation, has again highlighted what can be achieved with the right support.

The not-for-profit has helped thousands of people through life-changing apprenticeships and traineeships since it was founded in 1989.

Evie Rushforth is a prime example of success within the group’s training model.

She was employed by GTNT Group and completed her Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade apprenticeship with Groote Eylandt Mining Company.

Last December, Evie was recognised on the national stage and named Australian Apprentice of the Year at the Australian Training Awards held in Darwin.

She says GTNT Group supported her throughout her apprenticeship journey.

Evie singled out her GTNT Group employment specialist, Rachel Christo, who she saw once a month throughout her apprenticeship.

Through these monthly visits, Evie and GEMCO received tailored support to ensure she completed her qualification without delay.

“She was always there to make sure things were going well at work and I had everything I needed.

“It’s so important for apprentices to have an independent person checking in on them in case anything comes up that they need extra help for. I always felt like I had someone in my corner and that I was never alone.

“You have no idea how life-changing it can be to find something you love to do and what a difference it can make for someone like me, who lacked direction and purpose.”

As a group training organisation, GTNT Group legally employ apprentices and trainees and then place them with host businesses for on-the-job training.

They manage all employment responsibilities, including payroll, compliance, training coordination and entitlements, which gives businesses flexibility while ensuring apprentices and trainees receive high-quality training and support.

Chief Executive Officer Kathryn Stenson says: “Engaging an apprentice through GTNT Group allows host businesses to stay focused on daily operations without any administrative burden.

“We provide workplace support for the host business and specialised mentoring for the apprentice to address any issues or barriers.

“I strongly encourage all Territory businesses to consider employing a trainee or apprentice through a group training organisation for tailored support.

“By investing in our local talent, you’re not only strengthening your own workforce and future growth — you’re also playing a meaningful role creating the Territory’s future and ensuring the long-term success of our community.”

Host businesses gain access to motivated and supported workers when they host an apprentice or trainee through GTNT Group.

Group training organisations statistically have a higher completion rate when compared with national averages. This is due to the wraparound services that help the apprentices and trainees stay on track. Monthly visits create a safe space for issues to be raised and resolved regularly.

GTNT Group also designs and delivers industry-specific programs for disadvantaged jobseekers facing multiple barriers to employment.

The programs combine structured training, targeted mentoring and engagement strategies to connect individuals with sustainable employment opportunities across the NT.

GTNT Group plays a pivotal role in the NT economy and addresses workforce challenges through links with local and interstate organisations, charities, private business, training providers and schools.

It has also forged strong links with Indigenous Territorians. Partnered with the National Apprentice Employment Network, GTNT Group manages the Indigenous Skills and Employment Program, which supports 15-19 year olds entering employment across town camps in Alice Springs.

GTNT Group proves that when undertaking a vocational education and training pathway, using a group training organisation will provide you with all you will need to start a rewarding and enriching career.

They save employers time and resources by taking care of the recruitment and employment process – allowing the boss to focus on what matters most: running their business. TQ
