Most have moved thousands of kilometres and arrive not knowing anyone and speaking little English. This is a place where they can feel safe, supported and valued.
“You learn new things. It’s a bond, it’s a lifetime bond that you create here. I feel like I’m coming back home when I come back here.” Preeti, Connected Women participant and volunteer
Comfort, Support, and Friendship: The Connected Women Program
The Darwin and Katherine Australian Red Cross offices are alive with activity. There’s sewing classes happening in one room, where women proudly show off the creations they’ll model at an upcoming fashion show.
Nearby, unique designs come to life in a jewelry making workshop. Make-up tips and tricks are shared in another room. There’s food prepared during cooking demonstrations, laughter, and children playing.
Connected Women is a pioneering initiative in the Northern Territory that supports both migrant and Indigenous women and their families facing challenges.
The culturally safe and inclusive program addresses holistic needs by fostering socio-economic participation and social connection through participant-led workshops and events.
Operating in Darwin and Katherine, the program empowers participants by enhancing their capacity, skills, and knowledge, helping them overcome barriers to economic and social participation while reducing social isolation. In Darwin, the program has over 500 women from 45 nationalities, including First Nations women; in Katherine there are more than 100 women from 18 nationalities.
Preeti, who moved from India to Australia, found a haven in Connected Women. Initially struggling to find work despite her qualifications, she began as a participant and soon transitioned into a volunteer role, helping to organise activities and support fellow participants. The program’s support enabled her to secure employment in her field and embark on her entrepreneurial journey. Preeti’s story exemplifies how Connected Women empowers individuals to realise their ambitions.
Haroula, moved from Greece to Australia and faced challenging circumstances after escaping an abusive relationship. She joined Connected Women, improved her English, learnt new skills, and made many friends. “It gives me a purpose, staying here with no family … I feel all the time happy … Without Red Cross Connected Women Program, I would be lost and alone,” she shares.
Connected Women offers essential services that extend beyond skill-building. The program provides a robust support network, assisting women in improving their English, enhancing job readiness, and feeling integrated into their new community.
Community and business involvement is pivotal to the success of Connected Women. The program thrives on volunteer participation, with roles available as facilitators, mentors, and supporters.
Local businesses can contribute by offering their expertise, engaging in corporate volunteer opportunities, and providing pathways for Connected Women participants to join their enterprises, such as through catering opportunities.
Lee, a volunteer workshop facilitator, underscores the value of community involvement: “Connected Women is perfect for newcomers who miss their families and need a place to connect. Volunteers bring food from their cultures, and the shared meals remind them of home.” This community spirit fosters a welcoming environment, making the NT a more inclusive place for all.
