BUNJI KICKS GOALS
Tiwi Islander Dean Rioli was renowned for his acute “goal sense” when he played Australian Rules for Essendon.

That eye for a good opportunity didn’t desert the half forward flanker when he retired after playing exactly 100 games for the Bombers and returned home to the Northern Territory.
Dean saw a gap in the market for an Aboriginal majority-owned company to supply plant and equipment to major contractors.
Bunji Hire, which started operations at the start of 2020, is thriving. The business has grown year on year and is now supplying vehicles and equipment to Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, ACT, Tasmania and the Territory. It has offices in Darwin, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
Dean built up a strong rapport with project managers when he worked for 14 years supplying skilled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees on some of Victoria’s largest Infrastructure projects.
“That allowed me to transition from supplying labour to supplying vehicles and equipment,” he says.
Bunji Hire is working with many tier-1 companies on some of the largest projects in Australia. Clients include CPB Contractors, John Holland Group, Acciona, Tamboran, Monadelphous and Fulton Hogan. The projects include Westgate Tunnel, North East Link, Torrens to Darlington, Port Wakefield to Port Augusta road upgrade, Beetaloo Basin and Ichthys.
“The benefit of engaging Bunji Hire is that we use all local businesses in our supply chain,” Dean says.
“We purchase from local dealerships, our services and repairs on vehicles are from local Aboriginal-owned businesses, and our detailing of vehicles is with a registered local Aboriginal business.
“When you contact Bunji Hire, you can be assured you are dealing with the owner of the business. Bunji Hire takes pride in the relationships with our clients and values the personal service we offer.
“The company’s ambition is to become well established in every state and territory with a local Indigenous person managing operations in each jurisdiction.”
Bunji Hire sponsors and mentors not-for-profit organisations and programs involved in supporting health, education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
