BULMEKA FENCES THE TERRITORY

An Indigenous-owned business with a touching name is fast becoming one of the leading fencing companies in the Northern Territory.

Bulmeka Contracting is based in Darwin but has successfully carried out fence-building projects throughout the NT since it was founded last year.

It is owned by cousins Brandon Rusca and Dane Turner, who have more than 10 years experience in the industry.

Bulmeka was the skin name of Brandon’s late grandfather Sid, who was born under a tree in Borroloola and was a part of the Stolen Generations. He then went on to build the Rusca group of companies.

It is one of the few third-generation Indigenous businesses in Australia.

“We’re bringing a new style, a new professionalism to the fencing industry,” says Brandon, who is only 23. “We’re doing well because we provide a good service.

“Our goal at Bulmeka is to provide many opportunities to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and give back to the communities. There are big things on the horizon.

“No job is too small or too big for us. We’ve got the skills to do any job.”

Bulmeka, which employs six staff, has a major contract in Lajamanu, 560 kilometres south-east of Katherine, and hopes to win work at Gunbalanya, 300 kilometres east of Darwin.

“We work in town but are always willing to go remote,” says Brandon. “Lots of blokes don’t like going bush but our lot love it. They can’t wait to get out there.”

The company offers a comprehensive range of fencing options and materials.

“We work with clients to take care of every step of the process from design to completion,” says Brandon.

“Through our professionalism, reliability and proven expertise and experience, we strive to be the fencing provider of choice in the Northern Territory, and provide pathways and opportunities for people from all backgrounds.”

Bulmeka provides fences of any size and colour, and in any material, including chainmesh, aluminium slats, garrison pressed spear, tubular panels, Colorbond and frameless glass.

The company’s services include sliding gates, single swing gates, double swing gates and personal access gates.

“Our vision is to get a nice niche for fencing and, hopefully, expand our business into other areas.”

Recent projects include NT Fisheries, Lorraine Brennan Centre, Lajamanu community, Katherine Women’s Medical Centre, Barkly Sports Hub in Tennant Creek and Corroboree Hostels in Katherine.

Bulmeka likes to give back to the community – it has partnerships with HPA and COTA.
