BUILDING THE TERRITORY
Infrastructure in the Northern Territory is best delivered by people who understand the realities of building in the north – heat, distance, compressed programs and complex logistics.
Anyone involved in the industry will tell you that successful projects rely on collaboration between local contractors, national suppliers and project partners who can operate reliably in remote and high-pressure environments.
Having experienced teams on the ground – supported by national capability – is critical to keeping Territory projects moving safely and efficiently.
Infrabuild, a vertically integrated Australian steel business, ticks all the boxes.
The company has more than 100 years of steelmaking experience, operating across recycling, manufacturing and distribution nationwide.
It is a leading partner to tier 1 and tier 2 contractors, supporting Australia’s largest and most complex construction projects through scale, reliability and local presence.
Nationally, InfraBuild Reinforcing (IBR) operates with more than 1600 tonnes of daily processing capacity, integrated logistics and a reinforcing network spanning every mainland state and territory.
That gives the thriving Darwin-based arm the ability to use enormous proven capability.
National project experience can support the Territory with the same systems, safety standards and delivery discipline used on major projects across Australia.
This includes early contractor engagement, buildability input, detailing, prefabrication and coordinated delivery – all critical in regions where rework and delays carry higher risk.
IBR’s supply has supported major NT works across transport infrastructure, defence-related construction, port and marine assets, industrial developments and energy-linked projects, where reliability and compliance are essential.
The company’s branch manager Rosemary Vowles, who has been in the business for more than 25 years, says: “In the NT, logistics can be one of the biggest project risks. Local reinforcing capability helps reduce exposure to long freight routes, weather disruptions and supply uncertainty.
“Our national footprint, combined with local Territory service, supports faster response times, flexible delivery and alignment with construction programmes.
“Australian-made reinforcing steel also strengthens compliance assurance and reduces reliance on volatile global supply chains – a growing priority for government and major project proponents.”
IBR’s products are manufactured using electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, using recycled scrap steel to materially reduce embodied carbon.
High-strength products such as SENSE 600® enable projects to use less steel without redesign, improving safety, productivity and sustainability, particularly valuable in remote and high-cost environments such as the NT.
Digital tools, including BIM-enabled detailing and project traceability platforms, support safer construction, clearer compliance and more predictable delivery.
“Building the Northern Territory is not about short-term delivery – it requires sustained investment in people, capability and local supply chains,” says Ms Vowles.
“Industry partners play a key role in supporting local employment, Indigenous participation, skills development and safer construction practices.
“By combining national manufacturing strength with local reinforcing capability, IBR supports Territory infrastructure that delivers long-term value – for communities, industry and the nation.”
InfraBuild has been servicing the Territory for decades – InfraBuild Steel Centre for more than 70 years and the reinforcing business for more than 35 years.
The Darwin arm has the advantage of being able to use the vast, robust capability of the national network together with its local market supply experience.
“InfraBuild will continue to support the territory with a strong local presence.” TQ
