“Customer satisfaction and service is number one for me too,” says Alex Tsirbas, the new owner and manager of Trade Building Supplies in Darwin.

Taking over and reopening the doors on 30 November 2020, Alex is focussed on all the S’s — service, satisfaction and supplies.

“The shelves are fully stocked again. I can proudly say we now have a comprehensive range of quality building supplies for all Territorians.”

At 27, Alex is the fifth and youngest son of George and Athina Tsirbas, who established Ceramic Tile Centre, now Cerbis Ceramics, two years after arriving from Greece in 1987.

While none of the boys were expected to take over the business, they’ve all enjoyed growing up helping out as young children, learning the business ropes and acumen, and eventually following in their parents’ footsteps. Oldest son Ari took over Cerbis Ceramics when George retired. Using his stonemasonry skills, Stathi runs Cerbis Granite & Marble. Mario began 4Kitchens in 2009. Angelis established their Adelaide Cerbis Ceramics SA in 2015 and Alex worked with him after completing his civil engineering degree.

Born and raised in Darwin, Alex says the opportunity with Trade Building Supplies was the perfect reason he needed to come home.

“From the moment I left Darwin for university I’ve longed to return. My heart is here. I love Darwin and have missed the people.”

Alex’s wife, Skye, has also joined him in Darwin.

“She’s focussed on service and her previous office managerial roles will be a huge asset in running the office.”

With his older brothers all achieving longevity and success, Alex sees taking over the reins of Trade Building Supplies the challenge he needs.

“Their experience, good habits and ways of doing things are an ideal basis for me. They’re very supportive and have always been helpful when I’ve needed it.”

First established in 2002 as a small backyard operation, Trade Building Supplies grew to service Darwin’s more prominent builders.

“We’re bringing back a vast range of quality building products, old fashioned attention to detail and personalised service that’s often lost in our fast-paced, hectic way of life today,” says Alex.

Trade Building Supplies wide range will include some of Australia’s best industry suppliers from Pryda trusses, Bremick fasteners, Buildex, Hume doors, BGC fibre cement, Lockwood locks to steel wall frames, timber products, designer wood products, insulation, hand tools and much more.

“We’re aiming to be a one-stopshop for Darwin’s trade and public, where our friendly, experienced and knowledgeable team will assist you with every project whether residential, commercial or industrial.”

Like all Tsirbas businesses, the level of service is designed to build relationships and referrals with stock kept on-site and readily available.

“Skye and I are very much looking forward to this new chapter of our lives,” says Alex. “Being a locally owned and operated business, we look forward to growing together with the people of Darwin and the Northern Territory.”
