BTC’S CASINO CONTRACT A BIG WINNER
Darwin-based BTC Constructions has become something of a hotel refit specialist – work that demands carrying out often major tasks while causing minimum disruption to guests.
“Empty rooms cost the client money, so we have to work efficiently and swiftly,” says owner Brendan Cunningham.
“We have done a lot of this work now, which means we know how to get the job done to the highest standards.
“Our extensive experience allows us to work efficiently in what is called a ‘live environment’– when the hotel is still operating.
“We have to keep a lot of people happy. Timing is critical.”
BTC’s latest prestigious contracts, both design and construct, were part of a $15 million major facelift for the Mindil Beach Casino Resort.
Stage 1 entailed the refit of 58 rooms, infinity pool amenities block and reception and stage 2 the refit of 62 rooms and another amenities block.
Casino resort general manager Brad Morgan says: “The refurbishment has given the property a fresh, new look – a more of a relaxed coastal feel.”
BTC has also carried out successful major refits for Hilton hotels in Darwin, Alice Springs and Cairns.
“When we get returning clients it means we are doing things right. And the more you do something, the better you get at it,”
BTC uses a pool of trusted Northern Territory contractors.
“I’ve worked with them for many years and trust them to do a great job. They deliver. I never use big interstate contractors.
He says one of the keys to success in the construction business is developing solid relationships with the contractors.
“Relationships are 100 per cent important to delivering any project.”
His leading hand, Jami Brooks, started as a labourer at BTC – he is now a qualified tradesman and Australian Apprentice of the Year.
Brendan is a dual tradie – carpenter and plasterer – and is still very much involved in BTC’s work, from tender through project management to handover.
Brendan has clocked up more than 20 years in the building and construction industry and says his own personal growth and experience have become important assets in helping the company meet clients’ expectations.
While BTC is Darwin based it works across the Northern Territory and has experience in defence facilities, remote communities, office refurbishments, public housing, residential builds and renovations and, of course, hotel refurbishments.
The company continues to grow in a steady, sustainable way.
Services include project management, design and construct, commercial builds, fit-outs, renovations and extensions.
BTC is in the mood to expand and has set up two new sister companies. Brendan has gone into partnership with former AFL star Steven Motlop to form Motlop Constructions, which will tender for building work throughout the Territory, including remote communities.
He has also joined a couple of investors in founding commercial property development business BKM Projects, which has bought a 1600 square metre block of land in Berrimah for industrial warehousing. Building is about to commence in the coming months.
“And we’ve got our eye on another block,” says Brendan.
The New Zealand-born businessman founded BTC Constructions in 2014.
He completed his carpentry and plastering apprenticeship in 2010 and has extensive experience working around Australia – from cities to remote communities.
BTC has worked across many industries, including outback communities, city high rises, public housing, mine sites and defence bases.
Brendan still gets a big buzz out of successfully finishing complex jobs.
“It’s an amazing feeling.” TQ
