All Cast has been manufacturing the concrete behind some of the Territory’s most recognisable buildings for 40 years.

The Berrimah-based manufacturer supplied the precast for Parliament House, the Justice Centre and, most recently, the Northern Territory Art Gallery, completing the precast trifecta in Darwin’s State Square.

Today, the projects are getting bigger and more complex. All Cast is working on a 70-tonne pit for the Darwin Ship Lift, major Defence projects and has recently completed the new data centre in the Darwin CBD. “We’ve been casting in the Territory for 40 years and we’ve never been busier than we are right now,” says managing director Max Martin.

The company’s work extends well beyond the architectural panels seen on the face of a building. Much of it goes underground, including reinforced box culverts, stormwater pits, manholes, drainage channels, grease arrestors and oil separators.

It also manufactures specialised structural products, including bridge beams, bearing piles, building columns and suspended floors.

“Panels get looked at. Culverts get driven over. Both have to be right, and we’re set up to do both properly. That’s unusual in a market this size.”

The scale of the work underway is significant. Last year, over a three-month period, All Cast manufactured more than 550 panels and columns for the NEXTDC data centre in Darwin while also producing more than 1000 heavy duty culverts for RAAF base works, with each unit weighing around six tonnes. The company is now casting more than 100 cubic metres of precast concrete a day from its Berrimah yard.

Not everything is made to a standard design. Many projects require components built specifically for the job, with All Cast designing and manufacturing the moulds needed to produce them.

“If it can be engineered, we can work out how to manufacture it,” says Mr Martin. “That’s what we do.”

The work is backed by a workforce with decades of experience in precast manufacturing, with some employees having been with the business for more than 25 years.

“We’ve got a lot of experience in the yard. People know what works, what doesn’t, and where the problems are likely to come from. Having a strong core and reliable operators makes all the difference.”

Manufacturing in Darwin also has practical advantages. Precast concrete is heavy and expensive to transport, and large components can be vulnerable to damage in transit. Producing in Berrimah reduces freight and lead times while keeping All Cast close to the projects it supplies. Much of the company’s raw material comes from Territory quarries, with manufacturing and the majority of its workforce based in Darwin.

With Defence, marine, civil and commercial construction continuing across the Top End, All Cast is taking on more of the work being generated in the Territory.
